Our bodies are programmed to sweat under various conditions. It is an involuntary process to cool our body system when it gets heated up through physical exertion, lubricate the contact between moving parts of the body such as the arms and legs and a means of waste discharge to regulate fluid balance in our system. It is also a form of relief when we come under emotional stress and pressure. Therefore sweating is a natural and necessary function and like other facilities in our body, it can go wrong too.

We can over-sweat or under-sweat. The medical terms for them are Hyperhidrosis and Anhidrosis respectively. The former, better known as excessive sweat, is by far the more common of the two although the latter is usually much more serious and require certified medical attention. Millions of Americans have excessive sweat problem in varying degrees. Some are not even aware of their abnormality. The specific types of Hyperhidrosis are Axillary (armpit), Palmar (hands), Plantar (feet) and Facial (face).

Hyperhidrosis can be a condition on its own cause and existence or as a result of other ailments. The former is known as Primary Hyperhidrosis and is typically restricted to only specific areas of the body. The latter is known as Secondary Hyperhydrosis and is inherently tied to an underlying medical problem such as diabetes, thyroid, malignancy or other medical disorders. It also generally affects the entire body.

Although Primary Excessive Sweating is essentially a medical problem, it is rarely ever life-threatening. That being said, it can be a torment on those afflicted especially if it is accompanied by odor. Besides the physical bother of wet clothes and discomfort, it can also become an emotional burden. Some sufferers develop complicated psychological problem as a result of this ailment. Before it gets to that point, and it will if left untreated, the problem of excessive sweat needs to be stopped.

Various ways to Stop Excessive Sweat are available. It can be as simple as using antiperspirants or as serious as resorting to surgery. The middle ground options are oral medication, injections and even electrical therapy. The choice is largely individual and depends on the severity of the problem, costs, side-effect and risk consideration.
